Welcoming our new Group Scout Leader, Ben!

Ben Anderson to become new Group Scout Leader of 1st Gotham. Ben will undertake the role alongside Mark Howard who will now continue for a year, before he steps down in 2023 to coincide with the groups 65th anniversary.

Ben’s been in Scouts since he was six years old. He’s been involved all the way from Beavers to Explorers at 1st Gotham, and has been Cub Scout Leader with us since 2016. Previously, Ben was the first ever District Youth Commissioner for Rushcliffe Scouts and Trustee for Derbyshire Scouts.

Ben attributes much of his resilience and happiness to the skills he learned from his time as a Scout and is grateful for all the opportunities Scouts has given him. It’s important to Ben that he keeps promoting 1st Gotham as a welcoming and inclusive place for everybody, with a big focus on a high quality and balanced programme delivered by a brilliant and growing team of happy volunteers.

Ben said: “Everyone’s welcome at 1st Gotham. There’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for you or your child and we’ll help you find it. Discover your ‘thing’: from abseiling to coding to performance art and everything in between.”

We hit bullseyes, scaled climbing walls, laser tagged and much more on Camp 2022.

It's been a couple of years since we've dusted off the tents and got out there for a proper camp, so we thought we'd do it in style with a join Cub and Scout camp. 45+ young people went for a weekend of fun at Walesby Forest Camp Site. We enjoyed rafting, axe work, fires, discos, climbing, archery, laser tag and much more.

Mark and Emma hangs up their neckers after 5 impressive years.

After nearly 5 years of running 1st Gotham Scout Group, Mark Howard hangs up his necker as Group Scout Leader.

Over the last 5 years Mark has transformed our Scout HQ, guided us through the Covid 19 pandemic, ensuring that we came out stronger than when we went in, and successfully recruited adult volunteers meaning that the group is running at full capacity and is ready to tackle the future.

Thank you Mark, 1st Gotham is in a really good place, and is ready to continue providing skills for life for even more young people. That is your legacy. Time is the greatest gift you can give, and you gave it in abundance.

We're now on the hunt for our next Group Scout Leader. Find out more about the role here.

Thank You Parents

We just wanted to say a BIG thank you to the parents and carers for going the extra mile in the last year. We know we have only been able to do a few weeks of face-to-face in the last 12 months but it doesn't mean we've stopped and we couldn't have done it without you. During the last year we've Raced Around The World raising money for the 500 most deprived scout groups in the UK, Hiked To The Moon to support those hardest hit by the pandemic, made pen pals with care home residents, delivered 20+ online sessions as part of our Great Indoors Programme and even camped under our stairs or under the stars in our gardens as part of the Great Indoors Weekender.

We know it's not been easy, being on zoom, and we can't wait to get back to some face-to-face scouts soon.

Wintercamp 2021

From 15 - 17 January 2021 some of our Scouts and Explorers melted away their winter blues with an action-packed weekend of virtual, interactive fun!

2020: A Year Like No Other

The world’s thrown plenty of challenges at us recently, but that hasn’t stopped us.

During 2020 we've Race Around The World raising money for the 500 most deprived scout groups in the UK, Hiked To The Moon to support those hardest hit by the pandemic, made pen pals with care home residents, delivered countless online sessions as part of our Great Indoors Programme and even camped under our stairs or under the stars in our gardens as part of the Great Indoors Weekender.

It's been a tough year but we thank our volunteers and young people for their resilience. They are an inspiration.

We Raced Around The World

Thank you to everyone who has taken part in #RaceRoundTheWorld: our challenge to raise money for Scout Groups hit hardest by COVID-19.

Over the last six weeks, young people and their families, volunteers, and former Scouts joined one of four teams to #RaceRoundTheWorld.

Collectively, they’ve travelled over 150,000 miles round the world, learning about different customs and cultures along the way through our range of globetrotting activities. They’ve also raised over £220,000 through sponsorship and a grand total of over £250,000 including direct donations, making a world of difference to the Scout Groups hit hardest by the COVID-19 crisis.

The Great Indoors Weekender

From graduations to trips with friends, young people have missed out on all kinds of things this year. We thought they deserved something really special so we put together (cue big, boomy voice) The Great Indoors Weekender!

We hope you all had fun joining the UK’s biggest digital summer camp from your living room this July.

Care For Care Homes.jpg

We Care For Care Homes

Care homes have been hit incredibly hard by the current global pandemic, from residents falling ill to being separated from their loved ones. Our young people have told us that they usually help care homes throughout the year and that the crisis shouldn’t stop that from happening.

That’s why we asked our young people to collectively carry out 10,000 acts of kindness to help residents in their local care home, become kindness champions and show that they ‘care for care homes’.

Scouts Launch New Strategy

By 2023 we will have prepared more young people with skills for life, supported by amazing leaders delivering an inspiring programme.

We will be growing, more inclusive, shaped by young people and making a bigger impact in our communities.
